Horsham got off to a great start in this friendly against their South East Division opponents with Kieran Lavery scoring his fourth goal of the summer when heading in Charlie Harris’ ninth minute free-kick. The Hornets had the chance to double their lead from the penalty spot, just a few minutes later, but The Wasps’ former Horsham ‘keeper Brannon Daly saved Zack Newton’s spot-kick. Harvey Sparks sent another effort over the crossbar before Grinstead fashioned an equaliser, just before the half hour mark, and went in front less than ten minutes later.
Chris Smith was next to be denied by Daly before the turn around and the goalkeeper was at it again in the second half, getting in the way of another Lavery header. Harris’ free-kicks were causing problems for the home side and Horsham were unlucky not to level things when another excellent set-piece was met this time by Dylan Merchant who, unmarked at the back post, put his header against the upright before the ball was cleared off the line by a Wasps defender.
It was a positive second half showing from Horsham, for whom Sparks put another powerful effort just too high, and they got their rewards when Rob O’Toole, a second half replacement for Alex Kelly, smashed a free-kick into the bottom corner of the net with just seven minutes remaining to record Horsham’s second successive 2-2 draw. However, the match ended with concerns over the fitness of Lee Harding, Harry Mills and Will Miles with the opening match of the new season just ten days away.
