It was very much a make-do Horsham side that travelled to Dartford for this Metropolitan League game, and nobody was surprised with the result. Regular centre-forward Johnny Elphick, appeared at right-back, Leslie Glue came in at left-half, and Horsham ‘A’ team player Freddie Marshall appeared on the right-wing. Horsham held on grimly during the first half with Dartford always just that bit better in attack, and at half-time there was no score. After the interval Dartford increased their pressure and after only two minutes they opened the scoring when inside-left Sutherland beat Ernie Manouch. There was also a Marshall in the Dartford side, a 16-year-old lad who appeared at centre-forward, and he made the second goal. Moving out to the right, his centre came over just out of Manouch’s reach and outside-left Slater was there with his head. Dartford were pretty much on top throughout the half and Horsham rarely got in any constructive attacks. The young Marshall made the game certain for the hosts when he flicked the ball past Manouch from a Slater pass, and they had a chance to score again when Elphick handled in the area, but Sutherland miskicked the penalty and the ball trickled wide.
