This was the sort of football the supporters would have liked Horsham to have played on the Saturday. Guildford started off by forcing a terrific pace in this Metropolitan League game, but their ‘wearing down’ tactics did not work. Horsham gave as good as they got and were unlucky to lose 3-0. Guildford may have had the edge the whole way through, but the Sussex side should have scored at least two times. The City’s inside-right Thomson crashed a shot past Ernie Manouch in the first five minutes and it looked as though the stage was set for another heavy defeat, but Horsham quickly proved they could be equally as dangerous. Johnny Elphick beat goalkeeper Stevens to the ball and, with the open net ahead of him, shot past the post. Horsham’s other inside-forward, Robin Stepney, had even worse luck. Elphick had moved over to the left-wing and his centre found Peter Kingston. He slipped the ball through to Stepney who crashed it goalwards first time. The ball hit the underneath of the crossbar and bounced straight down before being hurriedly pushed away. By half-time Horsham had had as much of the attacking as Guildford and it was just a question of whether they could maintain the pace in the second half. They did, but it was once again Guildford who found the net. Within five minutes of the kick-off outside-left Hawthorne shot past an unsighted Manouch and it was the same player who netted from just outside the area within a few minutes from the end.
