Dom Di Paola’s hopes of a quiet summer have received a boost with the announcement that the core of last season’s squad has agreed to sign on again for another campaign. Keen to avoid another big closed season recruitment drive, the Hornets boss declared that he is looking at bringing in just three new signings ahead of the August 13th start, despite losing a number of key players in the past month.
Charlie Harris, Chris Sessegnon and Rob O’Toole have all decided to join Will Miles in seeking pastures new, while Steve Metcalf has hinted at hanging up his boots on a permanent basis along with Gary Charman. “Not only have we lost some excellent players but some top, top, lads who were firm favourites with our supporters” admitted Di Paola.
“Rob has been a fantastic servant for us, playing a huge part in getting the club back in to the Premier Division, and we did everything we could to convince Charlie to stay but he had made up his mind that he was leaving about a month before the end of the season. Losing Sess is another blow as he has been brilliant since we brought him in.
“They are big players and big personalities to replace but I’m hopeful of tying up a couple of new signings in the next couple of weeks and that should be it. I really didn’t want to make wholesale changes to the squad this year and it’s been made a bit easier as nearly all of last season’s squad have agreed to stay on for another season, which is fantastic as I honestly believe we were only a couple of players off being able to compete for the play-offs last season.”
The following have all agreed terms for the 2022/23 campaign:
Goalkeeper – Sam Howes
Defenders – Tom Day, Harvey Sparks, Danny Dudley
Midfielders – Jack Brivio, Charlie Hester-Cook, Lee Harding, Tom Kavanagh, Doug Tuck, Tom Richards, Lucas Rodrigues
Forwards – Shamir Fenelon
