While the first team are set to make their long-awaited return to action next month, our U18s must wait until the New Year before resuming their Isthmian Youth League programme with a revised schedule of matches.
It has been a frustrating start for Mark Hawthorne’s young side who, in their first season together, have played just three competitive matches since September so they will be hoping the visit of Three Bridges on January 12th will kick-start their campaign.
With just one point from their two league games to date, the Hornets sit next to bottom in the table but, with no side yet to play more than three matches, the South Division table placings are pretty meaningless at this stage of proceedings. They could, though, find themselves further adrift by the time they face Bridges, with each of the other nine teams set to play before then.
“There are a few teams who will return the week before Christmas” admitted U18s Secretary Shaun Scott, “and we’re trying to bring one of our games forward to the 22nd but if not, we’ll try and arrange a friendly early in the New Year. It’s been a disjointed start but it gives Mark and Sam (Jones, assistant-manager) a bit more time to work with the lads and have a look at a couple of the newbies, too.
“There’s not much we can do but enjoy each training session when we’re able to do so and, in all honesty, it’ll just be good to be kicking footballs around together again.
