Sunday 8th March
Mid-Sussex League Division One (double header)
The Camping World Community Stadium
Horsham U15 Amber v East Grinstead Town U15
Horsham shared the spoils in a keenly-contested double header against league rivals East Grinstead at the Camping World Community Stadium.
Game 1: Horsham Amber 2 East Grinstead 1
Without influential playmaker Alfie Clifford for the crunch ties, Horsham needed a change of formation yet they still started brightly. Zain Beg put in a huge shift as the lone striker and Henry Hazell saw plenty of the ball in midfield. However, neither side created a clear-cut opportunity until Joe Simpkin pounced on a defensive error to calmly slot home. Horsham looked to have settled matters when Louis Moger scored his first for the club, finishing off a fine team move involving Beg, Max Morris and Max Warren, but the visitors never gave up and reduced the deficit with 15 minutes left. Despite several nervy moments, Amber’s defence held firm against the best forward line they’ve faced all season. Captain Alfie Furneaux’s last ditch tackle was to prove vital in securing three points.
Game 2: East Grinstead 3 Horsham Amber 1
Horsham’s diminished squad was further weakened by the loss of Nico Massimo between matches due to sickness and, within minutes of kick-off, Simpkin was carried off having been on the receiving end of several bad tackles.
This left Amber lacking a goal threat or substitutes, although in truth it was a match they were never truly in, with the County Cup finalists largely dominating. Horsham were far from their fluid best with too many tired legs playing hopeful passes. East Grinstead struck two early goals and it might have been more but for Will Scurr. However, the Horsham shot-stopper made a rare error as the visitors claimed a third. Manager Tony Massimo’s team talk inspired an improved second half performance and Beg scored to offer faint hopes of a comeback. But the score was a fair reflection of the match.
Horsham: Will Scurr, Charlie Gibson, Alfie Furneaux, Joshua Mamo, Phelan Jeffery, Joe Simpkin, Max Morris, Henry Hazell, Isaac Small, Max Warren, Zain Beg
