Sunday 2nd February
Mid-Sussex League Cup quarter-final
East Grinstead Town U16 1 Horsham U16 6
@ The Camping World Community Stadium, Horsham

With the weather playing havoc to the fixtures, this quarter-final match was switched to The Camping World Community Stadium as East Grinstead’s home fixture and it was a relief for the U16 squad to play this previously postponed fixture.

The match was slow to get going and, with East Grinstead Wasps bringing in new faces, it was a different prospect to the league fixture in early December. However, as the first half reached the midway point it was the Hornets who stung first, when a Callum Chesworth free-kick found the head of Ben Auberey who steered it past the Grinstead keeper. This aerial do andinance was further exploited when Callum was again provider, his perfect cross finding Ben coming in to meet the ball with another header that eluded the Wasps’ goal stopper for the Hornets’ second goal. As the half continued, East Grinstead began to ask a few questions, especially as Horsham started to become wasteful with possession, and it was credit to the Hornets defensive unit that the half drew to close with a clean sheet intact.

With their ears still ringing from the half-time team talk, it was business as usual for the Yellows in the second half as Ben collected the ball in the East Grinstead penalty area and executed a skillful turn and stinging shot to complete his hat-trick. This spurred Horsham to kick on with further dominance in the air, this time Diego Carmo latching onto another superb cross to head home the Hornets’ fourth. The yellows were now on a roll, some good possession was being experienced through all areas and when Harry Sutton linked up well with Ayo-Oluwa Oke, the latter controlled well to score his home debut goal for the Hornets.

As the second half drew on, Ayo turned provider, this time feeding Ben who calmly scored his fourth and Horsham’s sixth. This free-scoring confidence was the catalyst for East Grinstead to grab a consolation goal when they managed to breach a very tight Horsham defensive unit. But this blip was the last piece of action in the second half as the whistle blew to seal another convincing win for the Hornets, seeing them progress into the League Cup semi-final.
