Sunday 12th January
Mid-Sussex League Cup Quarter-Final
Horsham U15 Amber 3 East Grinstead Town 0

Horsham Amber produced a fine team performance to gain some revenge for the previous week’s County Cup defeat at East Grinstead with a victory that sees them through to the League Cup semi-finals.

The hosts were in determined mood from the outset, but chances were few and far between as well-matched opponents battled for midfield superiority.

With the tenacious Max Morris impressing in a different role, Amber started to gain the upper hand, moving the ball around sharply. But the opening goal came from route one football. Zain Beg, brilliant as a lone frontman, took advantage of hesitant defending to set up Max Warren for a simple finish. The timing of the strike – seconds before half time – proved vital, as Horsham seized the initiative. Their second owed everything to Henry Hazell’s persistence. Having charged down the ‘keeper’s clearance, he recovered to fire home, just beating a covering defender to the ball.

The visitors never gave up, but Amber’s defence was in fine form and Alfie Clifford’s infectious energy in midfield drove the team on. The game was wrapped up when Max Warren capped a fine individual display by slotting home after Hazell’s unselfish lay-off.

The Hornets will now face Haywards Heath Town Colts n the semi-final on Sunday 26th January
