Chris Smith grabbed a hat-trick while Dylan Merchant also got on the scoresheet as Horsham climbed back to the top of the league thanks to a 4-0 victory over struggling Bowers & Pitsea.

In what has been a remarkable start to the season for Dom Di Paola’s side, the premise of a potential second successive promotion is beginning to look like a distinct possibility as The Hornets sit pretty having played 16 league games so far this term.

Smith opened the scoring in the 12th minute, forcing in after visiting goalkeeper Callum Coulter had parried out Kieran Pamment’s initial effort. There was a delay in the goal being awarded as despite the netting appearing to bulge, no one was quite sure if the ball had crossed the line before referee Shelby Elson correctly awarded Horsham with the goal.

Merchant then volleyed in on 24 minutes to put Horsham firmly in control at the break before Smith added two further goals and sealed his hat-trick during what was a poor second half of football.

Matt Dale and John Lines braved the elements to bring you their report and photographs respectively, now available at the match centre.

  1. Edlin J Parks says:

It was another fine performance from Horsham and I didn’t think it was a poor second-half,the conditions with the rain hammering down for the whole 90 minutes didn’t make it easy with a few players slipping on the wet surface. And for a nice change it’s good to report we had a very good referee too not taking any back-chat from players and after a fairly lengthy Bowers & Pitsea No 10 bending the refs earhole earned himself a rightful booking. Overall, an enjoyable game with four well taken goals to help keep our hands warm with applause. Well done Dom, coaches and players. ?????????
