It’s a busy week for the young Hornets, who face a second game in the space of just 72 hours! Having made the long trip to the coast on Monday night for their Bluefin Development league match against Hastings, a bruising encounter which ended in a 4-2 defeat, they host local rivals Broadbridge Heath on Thursday in the second round of the Sussex County U23s Challenge Cup .
Both sides breezed through their 1st round matches, The Bears comfortably defeating Langley Wanderers 4-0 away whilst the Hornets thrashed Arundel 8-0 at the Camping World Community Stadium. Both teams go into this match with a decent campaign so far in their respective leagues; the Heath are in 3rd place in the Southern Combination Under 23s league, with 4 wins and 2 defeats, whilst Horsham have a similar record in their Bluefin Isthmian Development league fixtures with 3 wins and 2 defeats and currently sit in 4th place. But league form will probably have little bearing on this cup match, with local rivalry and a lot of pride at stake, setting the game up nicely for a mouthwatering clash.
With the Hornets’ manager Mark Hawthorne needing to assess fitness ahead of the game, with a couple of his players carrying knocks from the ‘Battle at Hastings’, his Heath counterpart Graham Shergold will, no doubt, be selecting a strong team with several of his Under 23s having had Ist team experience this season.
So get along to support the young Hornets if you can…kick off 7.30pm at the Camping World Community Stadium. Admission: Adults £4, Concessions and Children £2.
