Dom Di Paola believes Saturday’s Isthmian Premier match at home to Merstham will be an ‘awkward game’ as his side look to bounce back from last week’s defeat.
Saturday’s opponents are winless in four games and currently sit in 16th, following their 2-1 defeat to Cray Wanderers on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, though the loss at Bishop’s Stortford was our first in the league since late August, Dom is certain the Moatsiders pose a similar challenge.
He said: “They are very much in the same sort of shape as Bishop’s Stortford were. They’ve not won in four games but I went to watch them at Cray on Tuesday night and they didn’t look out of place against a very good side.
“Ellis Brown and Yannick Monga are extremely quick, Omar Folkes is a known goalscorer and Sinn’Kaye Christie and James Richmond came up against one of the division’s best forward lines and weren’t really troubled by them.
“It’ll be an awkward game.”
Our last encounter with Merstham came in 2015, when they got promoted via the playoffs, a season in which we claimed a rare home victory against them, thanks to Tony Nwachukwu’s injury-time winner.
Kieran Lavery and Will Miles continue to be sidelined through injury while Lea Dawson is expected to be fit to start.
Dom said: “We’ve got to be careful with Will. He suffers a lot from injuries and, in my opinion, that’s the only thing that’s stopped him from playing much higher of the leagues.
“He’s struggling with his groin at the moment, which is his third different injury since pre-season, but although we miss him when he’s not in the team, we can’t rush him back. He wants to play every game but we’ve got to make sure we manage him properly.”
