After the disappointment of last week’s postponed League Cup match, the young Hornets travelled the short distance to near rivals Broadbridge Heath for this County Cup encounter and to determine who had the local bragging rights!

The early exchanges were pretty even, with both teams trying to come to terms with this new pitch for Broadbridge Bears but both defences coped well with the attacks thrown at them. It was on ten minutes that the deadlock was broken. Horsham’s Archie Fuller earnt a free-kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the box and Sam Andrews delivered the perfect cross for Ben Auberey to get the ball in the net.

This was the tipping point as, a few minutes later, Ben’s shot was well saved by the bears ‘keeper but Jonny Ruiz was on hand to get the ball home and put Horsham 0-2 to the good. The yellows were now in control, passing the ball well and creating chances at will. When Archie Fuller latched on to a great ball through, only to be bundled over in the box, Sam Andrews dispatched the resulting penalty past the diving ‘keeper to give Horsham a 0-3 lead at the half-time break.

The second half started in similar fashion with Horsham as the dominant force. A well-struck shot was saved by the Bears goalkeeper only for Callum Chesworth to collect the ball wide, deliver a delightful cross for Auberey to steer the ball home for his second of the game.

This was now a canter for the yellows, as some positional changes and alteration to the shape saw chance after chance created but some unfortunate finishing and great goalkeeping prevented the score line from getting out of control. However, when Harry Sutton delivered a superb corner-kick, Harvey Woolard was on hand to head home for Horsham’s fifth.

The attacks were relentless and when Harvey Woolard was set free, he calmly cut in to steer the ball into the bottom corner beyond the full stretched keeper to bring up the Hornets’ sixth. This was how it finished, despite further opportunities, but a great score line to move the young Horsham side into the next round of the County Cup.

Manager Dixie Laker was elated “to bounce back from a disappointing result last outing was credit to how the boys have reacted in training. They wanted this more than their opponents, creating some wonderful chances to score with great passages of play, moving the ball quickly out wide to develop the space for their team mates to exploit. I am extremely pleased. We move on, we have to concentrate on our next game, we will work hard in training to ensure we deliver another solid performance, we will not and cannot rest on this result!”

Final score 0-6 Horsham.
