The club can confirm that Josh James has been released and is believed to be returning to former club Burgess Hill Town. Josh rejoined the Hornets in the summer, having first played for the club at the start of the 2017/18 campaign, but has found first team opportunities limited this season, his only appearance coming in the recent Emirates FA Cup tie with Dartford.
“It’s been really unfortunate for Josh” said boss Dom Di Paola. “He missed the opening match so we put George (Bentley) in and he’s done really well, which has made it hard for him to get into the team. He’s a great lad and has never complained about the situation but he is a top ‘keeper who should be playing regularly so I can understand him wanting to move on.
“To be honest, had we been looking to win the title this year then Josh’s experience would have made him our number one ‘keeper but we feel we have the opportunity to help develop George as a player as we continue to develop as a squad. Who knows, we may see Josh back here again one day, but whatever the future holds for him we wish him well.”
Josh’s departure means Sebastian Oldham is now the club’s second choice goalkeeper.
