Grant Thetford’s stunning 30-yard strike sealed the visitors a deserved victory as Horsham were defeated in their first game at The Camping World Community Stadium.
The away side were awarded a penalty after just five minutes. Lucas Pattendon’s darting run into the box foiled by a desperate lunge from a Horsham defender.
Mitch Hand struck the resulting penalty hard but straight and Jack Gunn managed to block. The rebound fell kindly for the attacking side however the chance was placed over the bar.
With the Hornets unable to establish a foothold in the game, it was only through wayward finishing by the visitors and the resilience of keeper Gunn that the score remained goalless.
The Marigolds were denied the lead when Dion Jarvis rose highest in the Horsham area to plant his header in the net, only for the referee to spot a push and disallow the goal.
Littlehampton eventually grabbed their much-deserved lead in the 52nd minute. Thetford, picking up the ball over 30 yards from goal, advanced unchallenged, before unleashing a tremendous strike that flew past Gunn.
A great last-ditch tackle in the 77th minute, from Horsham defender Hand Hallan, prevented the visitors from extending their lead, however a lack of offensive threat meant it was never going to be the Hornets’ day as the final whistle blew.
The Horsham youngsters next entertain Woking U23s on Monday 12th August, kicking off at 7.45pm.
