Well, you lucky Hornets fans have a choice of matches this Saturday, with both the Under 23s and the senior side in action. In fact for those of you that cannot get enough footie you could see both! The youngsters are in action first, just a couple of miles up the road against local opposition Roffey, kicking off at 11am at Bartholomew Way Horsham, whilst Dom Di Paola takes his side for their final friendly outing to the Green Elephant Stadium, where they will take on opponents Burgess Hill at 3pm.
Mark Hawthorne, Manager of the Under 23’s, will be looking to continue his project towards shaping a team from the talented youngsters that he has assembled. This will be another stern test for his boys against a confident Roffey side that enjoyed an excellent season in 2018/19, earning promotion to the Southern Combination Division 1. The Roffey side have had two friendly outings so far, drawing 1-1 against a Dorking Wanderers Development side and beating Rudgwick 9-4 in a high scoring match last Saturday. The Horsham defence will need to be alert as they will be facing their former striker Patrick O’Sullivan who was top scorer in the Southern Combination League last season with a massive 48 goals.
The Hornets’ senior side will be looking to finish their successful pre-season with a flourish as they face familiar opponents Burgess Hill. In fact, so familiar are the two clubs that Horsham could almost put out a side comprised exclusively of ex-Hillians with Josh James, Scott Kirkwood, Rob O’Toole, Chris Smith, Lee Harding, George Hayward, Jack Brivio, Jazz Rance and Will Miles all having worn the Burgess Hill strip during their respective careers. Not that such an abundance of familiar faces will make the Hillians any less determined to put one over on the Hornets as they seek to end their less than convincing pre-season outings with a confidence boosting victory.
Hornets’ manager Dom Di Paola said recently that the pre-season was just a process to go through in order to get the team to where it needs to be for the start of the season. Well that process ends tomorrow and the real business starts with the opening BetVictor Premier League clash against Leatherhead at the Camping World Community Stadium on 10th August. Just 7 days time now….we can’t wait!
