Well here we go again! It’s that time of the year – the players have rested their bodies, enjoyed a nice relaxing holiday, and are now back in training. Yes it might still be mid-summer and Wimbledon is dominating our TV sports coverage but there’s no doubt about it, football is finally back.
And what a great time to be involved with Horsham FC. Not only is football back but it’s coming home! To the fantastic new ground at the Camping World Community Stadium with its immaculate state of the art 3G pitch, wonderful facilities, and with enthusiastic and excited fans chomping at the bit to see them back playing in Horsham at long last.
But for the next few weeks there’s a lot of hard work to be done.
Fitness, team preparation and organisation and bedding in some new players, will be at the forefront of boss Dom Di Paola’s thoughts as, despite the excitement and euphoria of last season’s fantastic play-off final, and the buzz surrounding the anticipation of our ground opening on Saturday, he will want to focus on the considerable challenge of establishing ourselves in the Premier Division of the Isthmian League.
First up, in a testing programme of eight friendlies lined up by the Hornets boss, is a visit to The Shooting Field to take on Steyning Town. Tuesday evening’s opponents, also a Community Club, with a 3G artificial playing surface installed in 2016, are themselves in the ascendancy. The Barrowmen earning promotion to the Southern Combination Premier Division as Division 1 runners up last season. They will no doubt be a good test of fitness for The Hornets, who suffered a shock 1-0 defeat in the FA Vase when the clubs last met in 2015.
Looking to push on further, the ambitious Barrowmen have shown their faith in Gerry Murphy by announcing this week that he is to be handed the full-time position of General Manager in addition to his existing role of first team manager.
The game gets underway at 7.45pm at The Shooting Field, Steyning, BN44 3RX.
Admission is free.
