Horsham U13s welcomed Worthing United Colts to YMCA’s Gorings Mead for this very important league encounter. On a wonderful pitch, the young Hornets warmed to the task of continuing an impressive league campaign and took an early lead when Luke Harrison won the ball in the middle of the park and put Stan Berry in behind the Blues’ defence to calmly slotted past the on-rushing ‘keeper. It was only a few minutes later that they extended the lead, this time Nathan Jones knocking the ball back to Luke who curled the ball into the top corner. Horsham were in control of this match and even when Worthing started to win a few balls, the Yellows’ defence were a strong wall to protect Monty Watson-Price, the Horsham shot-stopper. Midway through the first half Nathan was provider again, this time to the overlapping Finley Duneclift who took his shot early and put it past the Worthing ‘keeper to make it 3-0 at the interval.
The second half started with the Colts turning up the heat, winning little battles across the pitch and causing Horsham a few issues, even more so when Monty had to save superbly from a high, looping shot. Horsham changed it up with a few changes and this allowed Theo Brown to slip the ball into Denis Light who shot early and, with a slight deflection, beat the Worthing ‘keeper for the home side’s fourth goal. This ramped up the pressure as Worthing and Horsham went toe to toe in what became physical battle but it was the young Hornets who had the sting in their tail and when Luke won the ball in the centre circle, he drove forward and got his second of the game with a superb effort. The Horsham management team changed up the formation and personnel but were never in danger of conceding and when a nasty tackle ruled out the Yellows’ right wing-back from the game, the match was brought to a close and a convincing 5-0 win for the impressive young Horsham side.
Manager Paul Brown was calm after the game “The boys put in a great effort today and implemented the tactics we asked of them to see off this resilient Worthing United Colts side. We were lucky to play on such a superb pitch at YMCA, the boys did it justice and shone in this spring sunshine. We have three games left, with an important match next weekend against league leaders Rustington. They will be out for revenge following our recent League Cup win against them so the lads have to be right on their game and we hope to get them well prepared ahead of next week’s encounter. The run in is intense. I hope the boys can continue their impressive form!”
