Horsham U12s travelled down to an unknown quantity in Worthing Strikers for the first of their two games that fall either side of their upcoming County Cup Semi Final.

On arrival at the ground the pitch wasn’t in the best condition, the grass was long and there was a slight slope to one end. Normally it wouldn’t have been too much of a issue but with a strong wind blowing towards that end of the pitch it made for difficult conditions for both teams. Horsham started the half kicking up the hill and into the wind, but started brightly nonetheless with their first chance coming in the first minute when Sonny Barton saw a good effort go over the bar from the edge of the box. The game was being played in the Worthing half with Horsham passing the ball well, Adan Rubin played two superb passes to Bailey Moyo on the left wing and it was another excellent pass, this time by Sonny Barton, that put Markos Panoutsos through to opening the scoring for Horsham on four minutes.

Unfortunately the lead didn’t last long with Horsham being caught out by a long ball being carried by the wind down the right a minute later, a pass infield to the centre forward who then finished well past Alex Maynard in the Horsham goal to make it 1-1. Horsham had some good goal scoring opportunities as the half went on, some good approach play down the right wing saw Sam Ayling beat a player and deliver a good ball into the box which found Harry Lawson who in turn teed up Bailey Moyo who had a good effort saved. Thom Ong was unlucky with a looping effort that lobbed the Worthing ‘keeper only to narrowly drift wide of the upright. The same player was again unlucky as the half drew to a close with a shot that just went wide of the far post. The final effort of the half came when Luke York played one of the passes of the game from the back to find Bailey Moyo, unfortunately his run and subsequent shot on goal could only find the side netting.

The second half kicked off and Horsham were now kicking down the slope and with the wind behind them. However, even with this advantage, it was Worthing that got their noses in front two minutes after the restart. Following a couple of blocked shots they eventually fired the ball into the bottom corner to take the lead. There was still plenty of time left but the Horsham players appeared visibly frustrated. However, class shone through in the end and this was clearly apparent with Horsham’s equalising goal on thirty four minutes. Horsham were awarded a free kick on the left side of the box, Luke York struck a perfect free kick with power that absolutely flew into the top corner leaving the ‘keeper absolutely no chance!

Horsham never really looked back, Alex Maynard made some good saves in the game, the best and most important coming on thirty six minutes to keep the score level with a strong left arm and allowed Horsham to kick on from this point. On forty minutes Horsham won a corner that was delivered by Sonny Barton, Bailey Moyo finished superbly at the near post with a bullet header to put Horsham 3-2 up. After going ahead Horsham then killed the game off scoring four goals in fifteen minutes. Markos Panoutsos got himself on the end of a Sonny Barton cross to make it 4-2 and get his second of the game. Provider then became goal scorer when Sonny scored with a superbly struck left footed effort from the edge of the box to make it 5-2.

Harry Lawson went through one on one on forty eight minutes but the Worthing ‘keeper stood up well to deny him. Two minutes later the same player burst into the box and was bought down for a penalty. With an excellent display of sportsmanship the normal penalty taker for Horsham, Luke York, gave the ball to Markos Panoutsos so he could complete his hat trick. Markos duly obliged to make it 6-2. The final goal for Horsham came when Bailey Moyo released Adan Rubin on the right wing who calmly slotted past the Worthing ‘keeper to make it 7-2 two minutes before the final whistle.

Manager’s Comments:

”This was a nice game to win, and comfortably in the end. The players came off at half time and weren’t happy with how we were playing. We told them that it would be a different game in the second half and to keep doing what they were doing and it would come. It was always going to be a game of two halves with the pitch as it was and the conditions”.
