Horsham Youth U13s travelled to Barnham for their first game of the new season. It was a slow, nervous start as the ball was bobbling around and the first touch heavy, resulting in possession being won on the second ball. Both teams probed, but on 21 minutes it was the young Hornets that snuck the lead after a great through ball from George Southall-Nash found Joe Sherwood who chipped the keeper. The lead was short lived, though, as a Barnham corner saw the ball bounce and with no clearance coming, it allowed the home side to stab home from close range. The half drew to a close with the score level at 1-1.
The start of the second half saw Horsham command better control of the ball, through sharper passing and a calmer approach. The Hornets rattled the post and then on 40 minutes Rylan Schickell collected the ball outside the Barnham area and fired home, via a small deflection (but the dubious goals panel ruled in his favour). Barnham then struck the post but on 58 minutes the yellows extended their lead when a crossfield ball found Joe who cut in and fired ruthlessly past the Barnham ‘keeper. Horsham were now in control, the formation changed and with three minutes left of the seventy Joe grabbed his debut hat-trick when a great through ball set him free to poke home. The game drew to a close and a well-deserved, opening, three points for the travelling Hornets found them in buoyant mood.
Manager Paul Brown was happy with the result. “We worked well, slightly off the pace through the first half but picked up momentum in the second to see us come home with the spoils. The new lads in the squad fitted in superbly with our existing boys and we have an exciting group here and we are hoping for great things from them. This win sees us go into a tough second game on a high and allows us to concentrate on a few technical issues at training this week.”
Final score 1-4 Horsham.
