Arun & Chichester League

Horsham U12s travelled to Barnham for an Arun & Chichester League ‘double header’ on Suanday. The first game was a game of two halves; the young Hornets bossing the first half without being able to find the back of the net while Barnham took charge in the second and managed to grab a breakaway goal for a classic ‘smash and grab’ of the three points.

This was a disappointing result that saw the yellows fall behind Barnham in the league due to this loss, which upset manager Paul Brown “The boys did not play to their potential” he said. “We did not do the simple things right which meant we overplayed the ball, losing possession and not creating the chances we know this group of lads are capable of. We hope they put this right in match two”

The second game of this double header was a totally different affair! The boys had had their talking to about game one, which allowed them to make amends from the previous defeat. Controlling the ball better, they worked it into space to create the chances missing in the first match and took the lead early on in the first half when Nathan Jones was played through to stab the ball into the Barnham net. The second goal was a perfect example of how we have been coaching this young side. Finley Duneclift played a sensible one-two with Horsham keeper Monty, Fin then found Raul Barter on the right side of the pitch who then delivered a great, low, cross allowing Nathan to bundle the ball over the line for his second of the game. With the Hornets in control of the game, the third goal came when Cameron delivered a perfectly-weighted ball through the Barnham defence for Raul to race clear of the defence and fire home. The Hornets controlled the remainder of the match and were unlucky not to extend their goal tally as Stan Berry was flagged offside for three attempts, which seemed very harsh from our angle but they saw the game out 3-0 winners.

Paul was a lot happier after game two. “The boys responded to our stern discussion after match one. They played the better football, worked hard to close down, and we created the chances to grab the goals. I am happy with the way they reacted after our first defeat this year; we managed to grab the three points to give us hope of finishing third in this topsy turvy league campaign. We hope to now secure maximum points from our remaining four games to ensure we are not relying on other results to secure a top three spot!”
