Just two matches survived the weekend weather but, sadly, neither went the Hornets’ way. First to play were U13 Amber, who took on league rivals Rustington Otters in the quarter-finals of the Sussex County Cup. The Otters had switched venues to the 3G pitch at Arun Leisure Centre in order to get the tie played but manager Tony Massimo was dealt a blow when a number of the lads were unavailable due to the attraction of the Brighton/Arsenal match taking place at the Amex Stadium. Thankfully the U13s Greens came to their rescue by loaning them Tate Stowell and Cameron Stevens after their game was called off at Southwater Leisure Centre. Horsham had their chances, including missing a penalty and an open goal, but it wasn’t to be as Rustington – who have been a thorn in the Hornets’ side all season – went through to the semis by virtue of a 5-0 victory.
Our U16s were hoping to make up for the disappointment of having their Invitation Cup Final postponed on Friday night when they, too, took on Rustington Otters on Sunday afternoon. Just like the teams’ meeting in January, which the Otters won 3-2, this was a cagey affair and after Cody Blackstock had given the Hornets the lead, Rustington levelled things up at the break before netting a second half winner.
