It was all looking so positive on Sunday but, in the end, we were left with just one of our sides seeing any action. Horsham U16s were the only age group to get their game on, against Worthing Minors, for which we must thank Horsham YMCA for letting us use their pitch.
It was cold but Gorings Mead was rolled and flat – perfect conditions for a bright Sunday morning. Worthing Minors travelled up from the coast with a ten man squad and, for the first ten minutes, the match was pretty even albeit with a lot of aerial balls, which Horsham didn’t need to do as the surface was just right to play passing football on if maybe a little bobbly in places due to the frost. The Hornets did settle and started to dominate all over the pitch, even though Worthing Minors worked really hard and kept Horsham at bay. But their resilience was undone and at half-time Horsham were 2-0 up. The supporters enjoyed bacon rolls and a nice hot drink before we were back into the action when, after a quick team talk in the bitterly cold conditions, the lads started quickly as the Minors tired. Even though the visitors never gave up, even scoring a consolation goal on the break, the goals came thick and fast with the Hornets winning 8-1.
Scorers: Ben Cole (2), Harry Kent, Louis Paget (3), Jake Relleen, Louis Hartley
This was a great opportunity for the lads to get a bit of match practice before Friday’s Arun & Chichester League Invitation Cup Final against Bognor Regis at Arundel FC. Kick-off is 7.30pm, with admission costing just £2 including a souvenir programnme
