Arun & Chichester League Division A
This was the U12s’ first game of 2018, having last played on Sunday 3rd December, and they welcomed Chichester City Youth Green to Southwater village centre for league game six in division A, a side who sit a few positions above this young Hornets side.
Horsham started the brighter, showing an urgency to get control of the ball and pass it around into the space, trying to open up Chichester early on. It was from this good start that Horsham took the lead, after five minutes, when the ball was whipped into the City box and then flicked into the net by a defender. Two minutes later Nathan Jones got wide and sent in an early cross that evaded Stan for Cameron to slam home, 2-0 to Horsham. Chichester started to look lively but after some strong midfield play from the yellows the ball was played wide to Raul who again crossed well for Stan to score the Hornets’ third. This hurt Chichester and Horsham kept knocking on the door for more goals, with Denis and Finley playing some good balls into the box, but it was not until the twenty-third minute that Nathan picked the ball up, cut inside and curled a delightful shot into the far bottom corner to put Horsham 4-0 up at half time.
At the start of the second half the Hornets changed formation and it was this change that created their next opportunity. Theo and Jack played well in midfield to find Cameron, who slipped the ball into Stan, who then found Jasper to direct a ball to Raul who steered in the fifth goal for Horsham. With several changes taking place between players and formations, the next goal came midway through the second half when Frankie played in Raul who found Danny surging forward to steer the ball home for a 6-0 lead in Horsham’s favour. The Hornets’ seventh goal came with ten minutes to go when Stan scored his second after a great ball from Raul. Horsham saw the game out 7-0 winners.
The coaches were really pleased with this performance and Ross Butterfill said “we started the pre-match warm up in the right frame of mind, chatting, talking and directing – exactly what we knew they were capable of and today they showed what it means to arrive with the correct attitude.” Captain Jack had this to say “we passed well today and played as a proper team. We just need to talk a little more to let team mates know who is attacking the ball”
Manager Paul Brown added “the boys started quickly today and soon found their pace, which allowed us to put pressure on Chichester and dictate the game. We passed well and into space, allowing the boys to run onto the balls, our balls into the box were sharp and we were in command through all departments. I hope they can take this performance into our next run of matches to climb up the league, secure our position in division A and hopefully take us through our cup semi-final next week”
