Arun & Chichester League Division A
Horsham welcomed Lancing United to Southwater village centre for Matchday 5 of the Arun & Chichester League Division A but it did not start well for the young Hornets, as Lancing went in front early on from a good cross that was not dealt with, allowing their forward to sneak in to stab the ball home for a 1-0 lead. This should have sparked the yellows of Horsham into life, but it did not as Lancing kept winning the ball in the middle of the pitch to play through the defence to create more chances. Monty Watson-Price kept making good saves and Danny White was helping out the defence with some superbly timed tackles. As the first half was drawing to a close Horsham did create a couple of chances but the Lancing keeper and defenders denied any equaliser being scored.
The second half started brighter for Horsham, they started to create some good chances but could not make the breakthrough. The pitch was heavy and it seemed to take its toll on a depleted Horsham squad, with only one substitute option available the boys looked to tire. This allowed Lancing to create some opportunities themselves and, from one chance, they scored a second. The Hornets did not give up though, and a change in formation saw them give Lancing something to think about, with a good corner from Horsham seeing Finley Duneclift rifle home to bring the score back to 2-1. The yellows did try to snatch an equaliser but time ran out for them as the game ended 2-1 to Lancing.
Manager Paul Brown was very deflated at the final whistle. “The boys did not arrive with the correct attitude. The warm up was messy and disjointed creating an atmosphere of negativity! This carried into the first half, no encouragement from the boys just criticism that spread through the team, making them extremely quiet. The second half was better, but we gave ourselves a mountain to climb again conceding early and having to get back into the game. If our defence had not been as strong as it is we would have conceded more, but it was a superb effort, especially from Danny White who was Man of the Match for his performance today. We have to go again next week, try to get some momentum in this league.”
