Arun & Chichester League Challenge Cup
Horsham FC Youth U12 travelled south for this Challenge Cup quarter final against Angmering Youth and the game started as we predicted. It was a very nervous beginning as each team tried to sound each other out and prise an early opening. It took a moment of individual brilliance from Raul Barter, who received the ball wide on the left, jinked past a couple of players and fired the ball into the Angmering net to put Horsham 1-0 up. This allowed the Hornets to settle and, after some confident play through the middle, the ball was played wide right to Denis Light who whipped an early cross into the Angmering penalty area. The ball evaded Jasper Butterfill, trying to get his head to it, but found Raul following up on the far post to smash the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
Stan Berry then had a great chance for a third for the Yellows but his attempt at getting his head to a wonderful cross produced nothing, except to wake Angmering up and they who started to put some sustained pressure onto Horsham. It was down to some solid defending from Danny White and Cameron Cox, keeping the hosts at bay, and some brilliant centre half sweeping from Captain Jack New that allowed Monty Watson-Price to keep a clean sheet going into the half-time break.
The second half was very similar to the first, with chances being created for both teams but none of the opportunities taken. It was late in this half, and from a passage of slack passing between Horsham, that saw Angmering grab a goal back to make the score 2-1. However the Hornets’ two goal advantage was soon restored when Denis was played through wide right, and he kept the pressure on the Angmering defenders, winning the ball and smashing it home. From there the young Hornets saw the game out, winning 3-1 to reach the semi-final of the League Challenge Cup.
Paul, along with Ross and Alex, were pleased to see this game through and had these words to say. “The lads battled well against a tough side. Taking the early lead was crucial and the two goal burst inside a minute helped us to settle. To reach a semi-final is a great achievement and we hope this developing team can push on to gain a place in the final. I hope the boys take on the advice given, to improve over the coming weeks in the league campaign to gain huge momentum into the semi.”
