Having been comfortably beaten in the reverse fixture, Horsham will take huge confidence from a thrilling 4-3 home win against rivals Worthing Town Red. Horsham were positive from the off, using the pace of winger Max Warren to create opportunities, but the first goal came from an unlikely source, with holding midfielder Leighton Read stroking a lovely strike into the top left corner. This led to a spell of sustained pressure by Horsham, who doubled their lead when Zain Beg tapped in after a cross had been parried on to the crossbar by Worthing’s ‘keeper. Horsham’s defensive line and ‘keeper Will Scurr held strong against Worthing’s prolific strike force as Amber took a comfortable lead into the break.

However, within minutes of the re-start, Worthing Red had drawn level as Horsham struggled to adapt to half-time changes. Another strong counter attack saw Worthing go 3-2 ahead and Horsham appeared to be heading for defeat. But the defensive line rallied and produced a fine display against dangerous opponents. Tom Matthews made several essential tackles at right back, Isaac Small made great use of his strength, Joe Stevens again proved his versatility at left back, whilst Max Morris was composed as ever as sweeper. It was just down to the forward line to bring it home. Horsham gradually regained midfield superiority, leading to several half chances before Zach Barnett popped up for the equaliser after a nicely weighted dink from Beg. The tie looked destined to end in a draw, but there was to be a final twist. Manager Tony Massimo rolled the dice and put son Nico up front for the final minutes. It proved decisive, as Massimo caused mayhem in the Worthing box during a late corner. After a desperate scramble, the ball rolled out nicely for captain Sammy Henderson – so often the man for the big occasion – to drive home a half volley to seal a brilliant victory.
