Horsham FC Youth U12 welcomed Rustington Otters to Southwater, in an early reverse fixture. The young Hornets were looking to rectify the early season defeat by Rustington and had the early chance straight from the kick off, but the ball flew harmlessly over from a wide position. Rustington then took advantage of some positional changes, implemented by the manager Paul Brown, that did not pay dividends and within eleven minutes of the first half were 3-0 down!

Horsham then reverted to a more familiar shape, with players dropping into a tried and tested formation, allowing the boys to be more comfortable in possession of the ball. They started to create chances and soon had a goal back when a good kick from keeper Monty Watson-Price found Stan Berry, who muscled past the Rustington defence to fire under their advancing keeper. However the pressure from Horsham did not result in any more goals so at half time Horsham trailed 1-3.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, the early chance was for Horsham after some good pressure on the opposition but then Rustington started to find some balls behind the amber & green defence with Monty keeping out these attempts on the Hornets goal. Horsham then found composure and for the majority of the second half created the better chances but could not find a way past the Rustington defence or keeper, who was finding themselves under continual pressure from the yellow onslaught! The final whistle saw Horsham defeated at home three goals to one.

Manager Paul Brown had to apologise to the players and spectators after the game “my tactics were wrong, I have to accept the part I played in choosing the players positions early on, which saw us fall behind so quickly to three goals. I have learnt a valuable lesson today and I hope the players have too, when I changed it to a more familiar look we dominated possession, creating the chances to get back into this match. However this is football, we dust ourselves down, look at what we did right and implement this for sixty minutes plus in the next game.”

The management, coaching staff and skipper had this to add “as a squad we need to communicate with each other, for the majority of the time we were quiet. When we did talk we were not encouraging our team mates but being critically negative when it was not going right. We can change this at training on Tuesday to take it into our next fixture.”
