Sussex County Cup

Horsham Youth U12 travelled to Eastbourne to face East Sussex side Stonecross Royals, for their first taste of County Cup football. The boys had to be jolted into some sort of life during the warm up session, which was probably the only highlight for any criticism!

From the first whistle, Horsham dominated all over the pitch, good passing patterns with positive and decisive movement off the ball. It was on five minutes that Captain Jack New picked out Raul Barter on the left wing, for him to cut in and beat the oncoming ‘keeper and put Horsham 1-0 up. Further pressure was applied, our midfield were strong, and the defensive trio held any attacking threat at bay. On twelve minutes Horsham doubled their lead. Jack New made another incisive pass to find Jasper Butterfill, whose run and shot were parried by the Stonecross goalkeeper only for Jasper to bundle the ball into the path of a supporting Raul who got his second. The first half unfortunately ended with no further goals so Horsham went into the break two goals to the good.

After some positive words from Captain Jack, Horsham went out with a further determination to secure a win in this cup fixture and it was only a minute into the second half that saw Raul win the ball, burst into the Stonecross box, have his shot rebound off the ‘keeper but slot home the follow up for his second hat-trick in two games. Horsham did not let up and, with only five minutes gone in the half Raul played Finley into the wide right area for him to cross allowing Theo Brown to volley home, making it 4-0. It then took another ten minutes before Horsham scored again. Finley Duneclift found himself wide right to deliver a great cross for Cameron Cox to sweep home.

Then a small moment of concern and controversy as Horsham were reduced to eight men, after a red card to one of our defenders. However this did not upset the flow of momentum, even when an injury meant we had no substitutes to swap out meaning the remaining eight boys had to work very hard on a near full size pitch. Horsham did not wilt, the combination between Raul and Finley worked again as Fin played in Jasper for him to get on the score sheet, leaving Horsham 6-0 winners.

Manager Paul Brown said “This was a great performance from the start whistle through to the final one; the boys were immense and left everything they had on that huge pitch. We had boys absolutely shot at the final whistle, but what a way to experience County Cup football. We are very proud of this group after a focussed week of hard work.”
