Horsham U11s 7 Worthing Minors Youth U11s 3
Arun & Chichester League Winter Cup (Fraser League)
Date: 11-12-2016

Horsham Youth welcomed Worthing Minors to Southwater Leisure Centre for this final match in the U11 Winter Cup, Fraser League fixture. The young Hornets started quickly, finding their passes, and were soon 1-0 up when Charlie Brown burst into the box and was fouled. A penalty was awarded, which Charlie slammed into the Worthing goal. Minutes later Denis Light doubled the lead, finishing well after a lovely cross from Charlie, 2-0 to Horsham. The game was end to end and Worthing had to chance to reduce the arrears when they won a penalty but Alfie Maguire was in superb form, diving low to his left to palm the ball away to maintain the advantage. Horsham then broke away for Stan Berry to play in Denis for Horsham’s third. As the half was ending the game came to life and, on 28 minutes, Horsham went 4-0 up when Charlie had a shot blocked but rifled in a right foot screamer from the follow-up. Worthing replied a minute later, pulling it back to 4-1 after they won a free-kick, but Frankie Mills fed Jack Willis with a clever through ball immediately after the restart and he calmly slotted home to restore the four goal lead. However, Worthing came again and with minutes remaining got a second. Incredibly, Horsham attacked again from the kick-off and played out from defence, through Cameron Cox to Finlay Duneclift who slipped Jack free again for him to grab his second to conclude a frantic finale to the first half. For anyone struggling to keep count, it was 6-2 to Horsham at the break!

The second half started slowly but it was Worthing who struck first to get the score back to 6-3. Horsham started to wobble a bit, missing tackles, and it was Worthing who could have scored again but the defence held firm. Horsham started to get a stronger hold on the match again but it was not until the end of the half that they were awarded another penalty when Finlay was brought down, enabling Charlie to complete his hat-trick from the spot. Soon after this, the whistle blew and to leave Horsham as LEAGUE CHAMPIONS with an unbeaten Winter Cup record of played five, won three, drew two.

The coaching staff were full of praise for the boys. “The lads did extremely well to finish as champions. It is reward for the way they have grown as a squad and kept playing with our focus on passing.”
