Worthing Strikers Red 1 Horsham U11s 1
Arun & Chichester League (Winter Cup – Fraser League)
Horsham Youth U11 travelled to Goring for game seven of their Arun & Chichester League campaign, against Worthing Strikers Red. The game started well for the Hornets, with nice passes being made and the wide players being brought in early on to create width across the pitch. However, it was Worthing who struck the first blow with a well-taken goal after a long ball over the top. This did not panic Horsham, who kept creating chances with some attractive football but could not find a way past a strong defence and even stronger goalkeeper. Jack New was an inspirational captain for Horsham, guiding his players to cover any danger whilst making crucial tackles himself to lead the way. Danny White was playing his first match for the Hornets after a long injury lay-off and he combined well with Frankie Mills in controlling that attacking sector of midfield. Jasper Butterfill was lively upfront, covering for our missing strikers, and he was replaced with Charlie Brown who also filled this void but Horsham could not break down the Worthing team so it remained 1-0 to the home side at half-time.
The second half started well for Horsham with even better passing finding Finlay Duneclift and Dennis Light, the two wide players, but Horsham could still not score. Nathan Jones and Cameron Cox were a solid defensive wall in front of Alfie Maguire, who controlled his box well and came to clear any ball offered behind our back line. It was not until midway through the second half that Horsham equalised. Some good work between the midfield triangles saw Frankie gather the ball, jinx his way past three defenders, and fire the ball home for a deserved leveller. Horsham kept probing but could not get another break through, despite having a few chances and a few penalty appeals waved away, and the final whistle ended this game at 1-1.
The coaching staff praised the boys for the way they continued to play their passing game “the lads did well, even though we had to adapt to the Worthing long ball we controlled the game well but could not bring the three points home for Horsham so we have to settle for the one.”
Captain, Jack New, had his say “I was pleased with how the team listened today. It was a shame we could not find a winning goal though”
