Worthing United Colts 0 Horsham 4
Arun & Chichester League (Winter Cup – Fraser Cup)
Date: 06-11-2016

Horsham’s U11s travelled to Worthing for the start of the new winter cup in the Fraser league and with a few players missing due to illness, injury and holiday, this was going to be tough match. The early encounter was a very even contest, Worthing United kept probing our defence but our slightly altered formation saw each attack repelled, creating opportunities for counter attacks. Horsham started to get into the game more, we had better possession and this allowed us to find our passing game which, on 22 minutes, saw the ball played wide to Charlie Brown who beat his player to whip in a great cross for Jack Willis to finish first time through the keeper’s legs: 0-1 to Horsham. From this great goal the young Hornets grew in confidence and as the half drew to a close could have been leading by more, but the Worthing keeper was in superb form.

The start of the second half began slowly for Horsham and our stand in ‘keeper, Theo Brown, was commanding between the sticks and controlling his box with some great first time clearances. The Horsham passing game then began to pay dividends. Five minutes into the new half saw Nathan Jones win the ball three times in succession, he got the ball to Jasper Butterfill who twisted away from his marker to cross for Stan Berry to lob the ball over the Worthing goalie to double the lead. The game then settled into a cat and mouse encounter, both teams testing each other across the pitch and it was not until the 58th minute that Horsham put the match to bed. Jasper did not give up and won the battle out wide on the left to cross into box for Jack to beat the keeper at the second attempt. With the game drawing to a close a training ground throw in worked wonders when the ball was thrown to feet, a calm pass back to the thrower saw a great cross delivered for Stan to get his second on the second time of asking, making the score 4-0 to the Hornets.

The Horsham coaching staff were over the moon. After a tough start in the early cup campaign they started to see the Horsham of last season – passing, working as a team unit, and playing with some confidence. Manager Paul Brown was praising of this young side. “They worked hard today! The wide players tracked back to ensure we had defensive shape and we looked good in this slightly altered formation”. Coaches Ross Butterfill and Alex Bethall also praised the team “The boys did very well today. We gave them a lot to think about. We closed down early and our pressing game, high up the pitch saw Worthing struggle to get the ball out of their half.”

The parents’ vote for Man Of the Match was awarded to Jasper Butterfill – his work rate was exceptional today and deserves this award.
