Horsham 1 Worthing Town Blue 2
Arun & Chichester League
Horsham U11s welcomed in-form Worthing Town Blue to Southwater Leisure Centre on Sunday and it was the home side who started brightly, playing some good, calm, football and forcing the visitors to have long range, pot shots. Unfortunately it was from one of these efforts that saw Worthing take the lead, slightly against the run of play! However, as in previous weeks, this drove the young Hornets on and they kept playing a calm, passing game which soon brought a reward when Jack Willis was found outside the box and his effort was palmed into the Worthing net for a well-deserved equaliser. Horsham grew in maturity, bossing the midfield, passing the ball around with more control and, as the half drew to a close, they could have been ahead but the score remained 1-1 at the turnaround.
The second half started in a similar fashion, both teams working the ball end to end but the defenders stood firm with the ‘keepers denying all the attacks. However, as the game was drawing to a close, Worthing scrambled the ball through the Horsham defence and the ball found its way into the Horsham net to produce a devastating end to a very close game.
Coaches Alex Bethall and Ross Butterfill said ”The boys did not deserve to lose in that fashion. They battled well and, in periods, outplayed Worthing. The squad are still learning to work with new teammates, unfamiliar positions, and different formations. However, there are lots of positives and the lads should be proud of how they played today.”
Manager Paul Brown also complimented his squad. “We changed a few positions around, which worked well for the shape of the team. It was a huge disappointment to lose in that fashion when we could have been the ones taking the cup points instead.”
