We are pleased to announce the signing of experienced defender Steve Metcalf, who joins us today from Worthing. The 32 year old full-back, who includes Lewes, Horsham YMCA and Peacehaven & Telscombe among his former clubs, captained the Rebels to promotion to the Ryman Premier Division last season in what was his third spell at Woodside Road, but was released this week as the seasiders look to tighten their finances. As well as last season’s play-off success, Steve has both Ryman League Division One South and Sussex Senior Cup winners medals from his time at Peacehaven and will be included in tomorrow’s squad for the FA Trophy tie at Potters Bar. Two players who aren’t expected to feature are Lee Carney (flu’) and Alex Duncan (broken nose), while Luis Felipe Lire de Andrade (Newhaven), Jake Chadwick (Billinghsurst), George Cousins (Broadbridge Heath), Tom Atkinson (Loxwood) and Brad Lewis (Arundel) are all out on loan. Speaking to the West Sussex County Times recently, manager Dom di Paola explained his reasons for allowing so many of his fringe players to look elsewhere for their football. “It’s not worth putting them on the bench when they are not going to come on, it only means they are training Thursdays and they are not up to speed“ he said. “There is no point taking more than a couple on the bench when they could be playing elsewhere.”
